Cold Sores

Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. They are recognised by an outcrop of small blister-like lesions on or around the mouth and nose. These blisters dry out and form a scab. It is the fluid in this blister that contains the virus which can be transmitted to others.

Management

  • Good Hygiene - DO NOT share drinks, water bottles, towels, face washers etc.
  • DO NOT permit contact that will increase the risk of transmitting the infection, such as kissing
  • Use medications such as Zovirax (from your local National Pharmacies) when the tingle first starts to prevent the sore from developing.
