Wounds associated with fractures

A fracture with a wound is a complicated fracture and must be managed very carefully. The bone may or may not be visible. The injuries are treated in priority order - that is STOP THE BLEEDING then manage the fracture.

Management

  • Stay with the athlete and try to keep them calm.
  • Wear protective gloves.
  • Stop the bleeding by;
    • applying a sterile non-adhesive dressing
    • use a wound pad to apply firm pressure directly to the bleeding area if possible taking care not to move the fracture
    • if bleeding persists, relocate or apply a new pad - do not move the original dressing
    • apply ice on and around the bleeding area (over the bandage) if possible.
  • Transport to hospital as soon as possible by ambulance.
  • If bleeding is not a problem, the wound can be cleaned with a diluted antiseptic then covered with a sterile dressing and a firm bandageif possible.
  • IMMOBILISE THE INJURED LIMB.
