All wounds go through 3 stages of healing

Inflammation phase

Proliferation phase

Maturation phase


These phases are not exclusive, but each overlaps the other.

Factors that can increase the time taken for healing include;

  • extrinsic factors
  • mechanical stress
  • foreign matter temperature
  • infection
  • chemical stress
  • drugs
  • lifestyle
  • radiation therapy
  • maceration  - when the wound is too wet
  • desiccation  - when the wound is too dry
  • intrinsic factors
  • age, health, diabetes, anaemia, body build, nutrition.
