Infection

Infection is caused by small living organisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. Infection can enter the body via breaks in the integrity of the skin, ingestion, inhalation and injection.

Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of infection at the injury site include:

  • pain
  • redness
  • heat
  • swelling
  • loss of function/movement/strength
  • pus discharge
  • red streak up the vein.

An athlete with an infection may also have tender glands and may feel generally unwell.

Treatment

Refer to a doctor for immediate medical attention.
