Wounds Requiring Sutures

A wound requiring sutures when it is deep enough to reveal underlying tissues such as fat, tendons, bone or arteries. They are usually very bloody and it is important to stop the bleeding and refer the athlete to a doctor or hospital.

Management

  • apply pressure with an absorbent pad such as a combine to stop the bleeding (use gloves for protection)
  • clean the wound
  • apply a sterile non-adhesive dressing or wound closure strips
  • refer to a doctor and do not return to play until cleared by a doctor

NOTE:

Elite athletes such as AFL footballers have doctors at the game who can suture cuts and clear them so they can return to the game safely on the day.
