Try it.

So you think you have had enough fluids during your last game. Here’s a way of checking that may be fun to try as a team or just as an individual.
  1. Get an accurate pair of scales and place them in the change room or on a solid even surface by the side of the field / court.
Scales
Weigh the team in gear and record the results
  1. Weigh each of the team in the gear they are about to play in.
  1. Record the weight of each player.
  2. Play the full game and hydrate as you would normally.

  1. At the completion of the game, (before you drink anything) weigh each of the team.
  1. Subtract the figure gained at #5 from that of #3.
  1. Record the difference.
Re-weigh after the game (before hydration)

Here are some guidelines to follow.

Any fluid loss is a potential problem.

5% weight loss

The players mental alertness will begin to deteriorate. There will also be lower energy levels and a dry mouth.
Guidelines

10% weight loss.

At this level there can be a severe drop in mental alertness. Low energy levels and very dry mouth will be evident.

***This is the level where IV fluids are used to hydrate athletes and children.
